The Real Reason You’re Not Productive in Your Home Office

Why working from home is harder than we like to admit

Don’t get me wrong, I love being able to work from home, but sometimes I feel like I get less done than if I had an office to go to. Many of us no longer work in an office full time if we have a job that can be done remotely, or maybe you work full or part time somewhere else, and have a side hustle or do your studying at home. Either way, there are times when we look up at the clock and marvel over how many hours have gone by without feeling as if anything has been accomplished.

Here are a few ways to stay organized with your time and be productive while working from home:

Create Space

We all know distraction plays a huge roll in being productive, so ensuring you have a space that is condusive to your particular work style is crucial for success. Maybe you work better with music, maybe you work best wearing clothes that make you feel like you’re in a professional environment. Whatever the case may be, get curious about what does and doesn’t work for you to feel productive while you’re working and adjust accordingly.

Laying on the couch with your feet up not getting the job done? Maybe it’s time to move to a table with a chair that helps you sit up straight!

Set a timer

It’s so easy to get ‘in the mode’ when you sit down to work, but sometimes we realize we’re spending way too long on a task that should only take a few minutes. If you find yourself taking forever to write an email set a timer by using a time block (not your phone! Don’t create additional distractions for yourself!) that will help you asses exactly how long it takes you to get something done. If you find you’re giving yourself too much, or too little, time, then adjust the window. Tracking your own productivity will help you see where you can make incremental improvements over time.

Don’t look at your phone

To take the no phone rule a step further, this should go without saying, but unless the work you’re doing is on your phone this is usually the number one culprit for time passing without realizing it! The world will continue turning without you. But your world may not move forward in the direction you want if you don’t get this task done! So do future you a favor by being strict about putting your phone on silent mode while sitting down to get work done.
