How Organizing Makes Your (Motherhood) Dreams Possible
Freeze your eggs before you buy your first Chanel handbag
I’ll say this a thousand times if I have to—getting organized is the reason every dream of mine has not only been possible, but actually happened.
Motherhood was no exception.
When I was 32, I took a leap of faith on what felt like a huge decision. Recently out of a relationship, I chose to spend $10,000 on freezing my eggs. While friends and family questioned my choice—touting how expensive and intense the process was, especially because I had to fly to LA from Vancouver to do the procedure—I know in my heart that this was the best financial, emotional, and physical decision that I’ve ever made.
At the time, I had no idea if I’d ever even need to use my frozen eggs. As we know, the fertility journey is a winding and often unpredictable one. I knew there was a chance I’d get pregnant naturally one day, and I also knew that my frozen eggs could be my saving grace when I began trying to conceive—no matter my age. Plus, it felt good knowing that if I never used them, I could donate them to someone in need.
For the rest of my thirties after freezing my eggs, I spent zero energy stressing about getting older and not being able to get pregnant. Instead, I was able to divert that mental energy into my business—which yields much more return than the $10K I spent back then.
Plus, when I met the love of my life—who is now my fiancé and the father of my twin children—the eggs did come in handy. Now, we have a beautiful baby boy and girl and I feel fulfilled in a way that I never could have imagined. I’m so thankful for my younger self who trusted her instincts and did what felt right!
If you’re resonating with my story and also want less stress around the biological pressure of having kids by a certain age, trust me when I say that getting organized can help. Maybe right now you want to focus on your career, don’t feel ready yet for the huge step of having children, or don’t want to get married solely to have children. Wherever you’re at, here are my top three organizing tips to help your motherhood dreams come true—whenever you are ready:
Organize your business processes
You may be wondering how organizing your business processes can help you become a mother one day.
The truth is, when the backend of your business is in chaos, your mental energy drains your mental energy—energy that could be spent on revenue-generating activities that let you save money for your future family and, if you’re self-employed, a maternity leave fund.
Of course, money isn’t the most important thing when it comes to becoming a mother—but it helps. Having organized business processes lets you gain insight into what areas of your business you could use more support or fine-tuning, and where you’re ready to grow.
Personally, having an organizing business allows me to bring in multiple six-figures a year. This helped me be able to afford freezing my eggs and now gives me the ability to buy nourishing food for my family, hire extra help when I need it, and have access to the best possible care. P.S., you can read all about getting laser-focused on your business processes in my book, Organize Your Business Like a Boss: An Entrepreneur’s Six-Step System to Gaining More Time, Money, and Freedom.
Organize your closet
Again, you may read this and think, ‘how on earth can having an organized closet help me have kids?’
Picture this: Your business processes are streamlined and your revenue is growing. Your team knows exactly what to do, when to do it, and each project you execute couldn’t be going more smoothly. But every time you get up in the morning, you waste 30 extra minutes wondering what to wear—and when you finally think of an outfit in your overstuffed, cluttered closet, you can’t find part of it.
Just like having a chaotic backend of your business, having a chaotic backend of your personal life (like your closet) can wreak havoc on your time, energy, and nervous system. When you organize your personal belongings—donating or selling what you no longer need and getting clear on what you already have—you often avoid buying excess items (how many times have you found clothes you thought you lost once going through your closet?)—and overall save your mental energy.
And here’s the unexpected part: an organized closet frees you up to make better decisions everywhere else. When you start your morning feeling grounded rather than frazzled, you show up to your work with more clarity. You make smarter financial choices. You build your savings faster. All of this supports your long-term family goals—because the less mental clutter you carry, the more space you have to plan, dream, and prepare. Plus, any mom can tell you that once you begin the motherhood journey, a streamlined closet becomes even more essential. Babies require countless small decisions in a day; the more you can reduce decision fatigue now means you’ll have more bandwidth later, when you’re juggling schedules, appointments, feedings, and sleep deprivation.
Freeze your eggs before you buy your first Chanel handbag
When your business is organized and revenue is flowing, it can be tempting to preemptively treat yourself to something you’ve always had your eye on. In my case, I dreamed of a Chanel handbag for years—but I didn’t let myself buy one until after I froze my eggs. This is because allocating my resources as effectively and efficiently as possible is essential to me (read: being financially organized is key!)
The option to have kids can be taken away from women for a number of reasons—but age or illness should not be one of them. If you are serious about having kids one day, egg freezing should come first—before designer clothing.
Your motherhood is possible. While there are so many factors at play, getting organized can greatly reduce excess stress, help you focus on what matters, and better plan the future. These steps may seem like small things, but in the grand scheme they are quiet, powerful ways to set the wheels in motion and help your dreams of having children actually happen.
